Houmt Souk is the main town of Djerba and its shopping heart. People come first for its souks, a maze of covered lanes selling jewellery, rugs, pottery from Guellala, spices and leather; haggling is part of the game. A few minutes' walk away, the Borj el-Kebir fort, also called Borj Ghazi Mustapha, watches over the sea and recalls the island's eventful history. The fishing harbour and the fish market come alive in the morning. The town also keeps its old fondouks, caravanserais built around a courtyard, some of which are now hotels. Allow half a day, ideally in the morning before the heat. For the evening, Midoun and its tourist zone are on the other side of the island, less than half an hour's drive away: our menu is waiting for you there.
Visiting Houmt Souk: your questions
How long does it take to visit Houmt Souk?
Half a day is enough for the souks, the fort and the harbour; a full day if you want to take your time for lunch and browsing.
Should you haggle in the souks?
Yes, it is customary for crafts, with a smile. Spices and goods sold by weight are less negotiable.
